April-Volunteer Spotlight

April 28, 2012

WEM's Archival Intern, Julia Dougherty

The Wharton Esherick Museum would be nothing without our volunteers. We depend on them to give tours, maintain the landscape and to archive the collection.

This month’s spotlight shines on Julia Dougherty.

Julia is a graduate student pursuing a Master’s degree in Museum Communications at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia.  At the Museum, she organizes, houses and catalogs our collection of photographs, which range from photos of Esherick’s work, his studio, himself and his family.  In the initial phases of cataloging, Julia is recording hundreds of photos, which she then places into  protective sleeves.  In the upcoming months, she will  digitally catalog this collection.

She says,

“The archival process has been a very enjoyable, interesting and informative process for me.  I have gained valuable knowledge about archiving while receiving a deeper understanding and appreciation of Esherick’s life and work.

In the long run, Julia’s work will make access to Esherick’s life and work easier for Museum staff and researchers. We cannot thank her enough for her invaluable help in preserving Esherick’s life for all to enjoy.

Thank you, Julia!
